●LaRee Ewers’
storytelling to “Make Tired Eyes Smile” makes anyone who has witnessed the
reactions of the Alzheimer’s participants realize that they are watching
someone truly special and gifted. LaRee is able to effectively draw those
caught in the dark, out into the brightness to relive pleasant times and
experiences. LaRee is gentle and caring
and patient with people that have become invisible to others. Making Tired
Eyes Smile brings a smile to the heart. KC, Clearwater,
FL.
●LaRee,
how nice to meet you through this tender example of your work. I've
co-coordinated our area Alzheimer's/memory loss family support group for years. I think that from now on,
whenever I'm visiting with persons with Alzheimer's, your words will help me to
have a better focus, "The present moment is where we meet." Again,
many, many thanks for your sharing your Sandcastles. Cordially, RS, MN.
●I like how you make
us feel. I am going to take that to heaven with me. A friend in LaRee’s circle
of friends, Clearwater, FL
●LaRee, this approach *needs* to be shared. Is
there a way we could make that happen? DG, Indiana
●Making Tired Eyes Smiles is an absolute
communication learning tool. Communicating with a person with Alzheimer’s
requires patience and understanding. This can be increasingly challenging and
sensitive. On going communication is important, no matter how difficult it may
become or how confused the person may appear. They still require and benefit
from the continued storytelling. The use of photographs and other items remind
the residents of important relationships. CH, (Activity Director) Clearwater,
FL.
●I know an
excellent resource for Alzheimer’s. A woman in Florida has designed a program for patients that
actually helps them “remember” through story and poetry. There is also a
component for family support groups. It is amazing and it came out of
caring for her mother-in-law. Her name is LaRee Ewers and her email is LaReeEwers@verizon.net. I
copied her on this email. She’d be terrific. JH, Minneapolis, MN.
●It is our privilege to name LaRee
Ewers as our volunteer of the year. LaRee creates stories with
our residents in memory support. We wish her
well in her goal to make this story activity a national project. An assisted
living facility, Clearwater, FL.
